Patriot Green and Lady Chessers rank third in NCRUCLAA, Lady Paddlers notch second
Debuting their National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) campaign, the Patriot chess teams wrapped up their one-day chessboard clash with an overall third podium finish, while the Patriot lady paddlers landed at second spot in the NCRUCLAA table tennis tournament held at the Ugnayang La Salle, yesterday, April 2.
Grabbing gold medals for the lady woodpushers, Patriots Paula Manalo and Kate Columna outsmarted contenders Lean de Lena of University of Makati (UMak) and Faith Sabuga of Rizal Technological University (RTU), respectively. Meanwhile, Christine Hernandez secured a silver in the Board 1 match as Lindsay Mendoza and Angelique Mendoza added two bronze after both placed third in the Boards 2 and 4 events.
In the men’s division, the green-and-white chessers collected three silver as twins Genrech and Genten Lalas and Clinton Andres fell short against top seeds Prince San Juan of RTU and Carlos Colicot and Emmanuel Molero of UMak, respectively. Meanwhile, Patriots John Paul Españo and Somel Chan tallied two additional bronze medals after both finished third in the Boards 1 and 4 matches.
Despite the male paddlers’ failure to notch a spot, the DLSU-D women’s table tennis team, composed of veteran Rosalyn Zapanta, Corizza Soriano, and Patriot pair Anne Campoto and Rookie Anne Jarin, managed to rank second in a round-robin ranking system behind champs RTU table tennis team. Meanwhile, Paddlers Arthur Martizon, Elton Tan, and duo Roi de Vega and Rookie Jesus Agustin placed fourth overall.
“‘Yong pagkapanalo ng women’s team, it’s a team effort. Kasi ginagawa ko, pinapalaro ko sa kanila lahat, singles, doubles. ‘Yon ‘yong very important sa team, [ang] makapag-contribute ka ng game sa lahat,” Patriots table tennis head coach Alvin Villasis explained regarding the team’s performance despite the appearance of rookies this semester.
